Vintage One Carat Old Cut MARQUISE Diamond Ruby HALO Navette French Art Deco Ring 18k Gold Platinum Belle Epoque Pink Rose Cut Accents
Back from my inventory trip to Europe with lots of unique one of one vintage and antique pieces. See group photo for additional examples.
ABOUT:
I have always wanted one of these antique old cut halo rings so I was excited to find this one - a one carat old cut marquise cut diamond surrounded by natural rubies. The previous versions I had eyed over the years had the traditional round or cushioned old mine cut center. So I was very excited to find this one with the even more uncommon shape at center. Old cut diamonds are already rare and in limited supply compared to the millions of carats of machine cut diamonds produced each year now, so adding that in with this one being the marquise / navette shape makes it even more uncommon! Always fun to find old cut stones in shapes outside of round.
I got this ring just outside of Paris. It was sold to me as one carat for the center. As someone who looks at diamonds all day every day, it appears larger to me, but we'll go with that estimate to be safe. My observation is likely contributed to by the shape of the stone - as marquise diamonds are often considered to be the largest-looking diamond in shape for their carat weight. They typically appears 10–20% larger than a round diamond of the same weight so... checkmark in the "Bonus" column for the marquise cut! Hip hip hooray! : )
Unlike round diamonds that carry much of their weight in their depth (bottom), marquise cuts are generally shallower, meaning more of their weight is visible from the top, the elongated shape spreads the weight to make it face up larger. This one has a more narrow / elongated shape than modern proportioned diamonds which I also love in that it adds a bit more drama and uniqueness.
This one certainly has its eccentric quality as well. In ambient light, the stone is actually eye clean. BUT - in sunlight, the diamond has a bit of an "aura" that is the result of the faintest translucent cloud inclusion. This contributes to its overall bright color, but it can make it appear a bit milky in direct sunlight. The diamond actually has a better than most clarity for an old cut stone otherwise, so most of the time while wearing, this is not seen but then when you get it in the sun, you can see how it responds differently compared to diamonds without clouds. Definitely double check the video to see how it responds in sunlight and feel free to check my instagram where I have several video examples shown. You can request additional from me as well as I have taken many in different lighting conditions to give you an idea how the piece wears. The natural diamond has a faint fluorescence and still also has a beautiful, soft sparkle, the cloud inclusion again not really eye visible until it affects its response to direct sunlight.
The channel set halo of carre and trapezoid cut rubies provide that wonderful contrast of color. I believe the rubies to be natural because they show a wonderful slight variation in color under lit magnification which is often indicative, but do note that I have not sent them off for testing. It could also be a combination of stones as jewelers from the period often used what they had available to them and what provided the best fit and match.
The ornate details of the ring continue to the shoulders that are set with rose cut diamonds for additional sparkle, and the openwork lattice pattern of the gallery. Sturdy shank, the piece is crafted in 18k gold with the shoulders and the two bezels topped in platinum for contrast and as was customary during the period to set diamonds in a white metal. French hallmarks for both on the side of the shank.
Antique box not included. Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos, especially with the zoomed images that I am required to present for detail.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size 10, sturdy shank is definitely sizable but best to discuss with your local jeweler who would be doing the work to determine the extent. The ring face is 16.8mm north south.
It weighs a sturdy 5.6g.
The diamond was sold to me as 1 carat. To me it reads quite large and spready at 11.8x3.4mm. Exact carat weight is unknown as I would not remove it from the setting.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
This one is in really nice condition, with just a bit of surface wear on 3 or 4 of the rubies, right on the east and west sides of the diamond.
I had planned to list this one significantly higher when I purchased it, thinking it just needed a good cleaning because it has quite a good clarity until the faint clouds are detected. Again they are not eye visible but affect the light reflectivity of the piece especially in sunshine. If you utilize the 20x zoom photos you should be able to seek these things out as it magnifies them much more than with normal wear. I really tried to accent it by shooting it at angles and showing the reality of the piece.
It is priced with this in mind. Under strong lit magnification, you can see the faint shadow like slight and sparse haze and it does affect the majority of the stone despite not being seen by the eye in ambient light. There is just one tiny carbon speck otherwise and an indented natural inclusion on one edge of the table facet, generally not eye visible. GIA defines this as a dent that occurs under the surface of a diamond as a result of the diamond cutter's decision not to polish it off, because doing so could end up harming the diamond so the cutters would work around it - this is not considered a defect or blemish but under strong magnification it looks like a frosty unpolished speck or dust particle.
Sturdy setting, the stones are well set. Typical rose cuts, frosty for the period, small just meant to add a glint of sparke. Edge of the shank is a bit blunt from having been worn a bit thin but still super stable and quite wide all the way around. This one is quite impactful to wear and a rarer old cut stone shape again facing up larger.
Please note that I take some photos / videos in the sunshine because it captures the lovely color and sparkle, this also highlights the faint abrasions on the rubies and over emphasizes the cloud inclusion of the center diamond. Hopefully the pics in all lighting conditions help as they serve as part of the description.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
