GIARDINETTI Antique Floral Bouquet Ring Flower Basket Rare Peruzzi Chiffre Rose Cut Diamond Garnet Emerald Georgian 14k Gold Rococo 1700s
ABOUT:
Here is a lovely antique giardinetti ring depicting a flower basket with a mix of gemstones including some rare / uncommon diamond cuts. On the left and right side are two Peruzzi cut diamonds, one a gorgeous amber color, the other a grayish brown color. And then my favorite part is at the bottom center of the basket - the TRIANGULAR rose cut diamond which is yellow in hue. It is shaped like a trillion rose cut. I don't mean to use shouty caps but it is such a cool stone, not a common cut to be found. It's rare and called a chiffre cut diamond, which is found in 17th century Renaissance jewelry and also in some mid 18th century Rococo pieces. I am always looking for these cuts, even though it's small, it's there! The piece also holds an emerald and garnets for a wonderful sparkle with a pop of color. All stones in closed back settings.
No hallmarks remain but tests at 14k gold. The floral gem settings are topped in silver as was customary for the period. Beautiful movement to the ornate shoulders. A delicate shank also typical for the period.
Antique box is not included. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size 8, the ring face is 13mm north to south. It weighs 2.85 grams.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
There is deterioration to the foil backs so the gems appear very warm in color. The exact hue of the chiffre cut is difficult to determine due to the darkening of the foil back. These closed back settings shouldn't get wet. Typical very hold hand cut stones with some frosty spots. No stones missing.
There is a gold patch to the back, not seen while wearing except that it provides a shadow behind the openwork shoulders. Aside from the uncommon and rare diamond cuts, this is another evidence of its age of over 275 years and its authenticity, where they reinforced it inside the shoulder where the shank meets the ring face. These often have dainty and delicate shanks as is the case here. But it is still stable to wear. Shank is a bit blunt and thin but does not flex or bend.
Abrasions to the three colored gemstones and the diamonds irregular and rough cut, particularly the rose cuts.
This is pretty much all typical and expected for a piece of this age, it is not in mint condition.
All my pieces are preowned and in estate condition. Important to consider age. Some natural inclusions to the stones, some nicks and scuffs to the gems. The emerald has some nibbles and flakes of loss to one edge but overall appears complete in the setting. Typical antique rose cuts with some natural inclusions. They are nice and bright and reflective, though with a grayish hue from the foil back. One diamond has a dark gray carbon inclusion that is eye visible. There are weld marks inside each shoulder from when the piece was re-shaanked. Keeping all these things in mind, I have priced it to sell, being sold as is. Still wearable and not super fragile compared to some of this age although you'd want to keep an eye on the bezels over time. The sapphire bezel appears to have been fortified under magnification.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
