Antique Natural Sapphire Peacock Greenish Blue Halo Ring with Rose Cut Diamonds French Early 1900s Victorian Edwardian
ABOUT:
I've been enjoying sourcing these antique natural sapphire halo rings as they have been quite popular so I continue hunting for them. I love this one - a true blue that lights up a greenish teal peacock blue, accented with 12 rose cut diamonds in the halo with contrasting prongs.
This is a French antique piece from around the turn of the century with their hallmarks for 18k gold with a partial goldsmith stamp.
Also love to find the sapphire in better than most condition with little to no abrasions, overall an excellent sheen and polish for age. Then with those wonderful rose cuts for a fabulous antique sparkle.
Did you know that in natural sapphires, inclusions are often sought after to help scatter light and thereby enhance the stone's color? That would be the case with this one, the rutile silk inclusions giving the stones a velvety glow from within, similar to the effect of a star sapphire but without the star shape. : ). So beautiful!
Antique box not included. Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
It is a size 9. Sizeable to an extent but best to discuss with your local jeweler doing the work to determine their comfort level.
It weighs 4.7 grams.
The ring face is 13.1mm north south.
The sapphire is 7.5x6.7mm - I would not remove it for exact weight but by mm measurements, usually around 1.5 carat. The diamonds are about 2.4mm each, facing up over .7 carats in diamonds but with flat backs and unknown exact weights.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Two or three scratches to the table of the sapphire and one deeper one - on one of the smaller side facet. These are nothing major and are seen more under magnification unless in direct light which can lead to the scratch catching the light and enhancing it much more than with normal wear. You can see the side one lit up in the video which again over accentuates it compared to seeing it in person but I wanted to highlight the color and sparkle..
The diamonds are frosty on some outside edges. Part of it is they are rough cut rose cuts but some of this is from wear as well, including one stone that is chipped and has a notch in the girdle with a little triangle of loss to the edge of the stone. Three others have a rough outside edges with frosty flakes of loss and some nibbles / small chips. They still fill the setting and appear complete for the most part, you'd have to seek out the outside edge to notice. The others are complete, some are eye clean, some with a frosty speck inclusion here or there. No dark carbon, they are meant to add sparkle, the sapphire is the star of this show. Amazing coloring.
The sapphire is very well held. Some wear to the diamond prongs, especially the outside edge prongs typical for age. None of the stones move but I always recommend gentler wear on my all original antiques with a lot of small stones.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
Thanks so much for looking at my items!
