One Large BUMBLE BEE Victorian Antique Figural 18k Gold Solid Silver Rose Cut Diamond French Pendant Ruby Eyes Black Enamel Stripes
I take regularly scheduled inventory trips to Europe to offer you a selection of carefully curated antiques. These have all been hand picked one at a time and most are one of a kind.
ABOUT:
What a fun motif! Pretty uncommon to find in antiques and these are nice size.
French antique bumble bee pendant from the Victorian period. I actually have two of these as they came off of a broken brooch where the two bees perched on a bar pin. Selling them individually as pendants, so price is for one.
Crafted in 18k gold with the wings topped in silver, they are set with rose cut diamonds for sparkle. To make the bumblebee stripes, there is enamel alternating with the 18k gold body of the bee. For one of them the wings and legs are fixed, on the other one, they have the ability to move a little bit as the parts were hinged together, just how it was made but no real noticeable difference between the two while wearing.
One bee has an additional diamond above the head but has no gems in his eyes, just open circles. The other does not have a diamond above the head but has two ruby eyes. Again I think they were just made this way. If you are buying the first of two and it still says two available, feel free to specify in your order which you prefer, the ruby eyes or the additional diamond. : ). UPDATE - Ruby eyes version Sold.
Plenty of antique patina, the loops were made from the 18k pin back but with warm patina to match the rest of the piece.
The Victorians were fascinated with nature and also with jewelry, and we see some wonderful designs come from the period incorporating both of these delights.
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures. Some of my buyers "draw out" an example to get an idea of scale in person.
No visible hallmarks as the piece was stamped on the pin parts.
Antique Boxes, props, hooks, chains, mice : ) not included. I just used some staging chains to show examples of how to wear.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
Weight is 2.8 and 3.5 grams.
25mm by 14mm with a nice 3D depth.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Plenty of patina including dark areas from the silver, the gold has a warm rosy patina. Some nicks and slight loss to the enamel but overall appearing complete. Sturdy and ready to wear.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : ) There are no dark spots to the gold, it was just difficult to photograph because it is so shiny and mirrored that it reflects its surroundings including the green trees out the window.
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
Thanks so much for looking at my items!
